The Supervisor, Failure Analysis Engineering will lead a team of engineers and technicians who are responsible for performing failure analysis and root cause analysis on returned products and reported field issues. This position requires a deep knowledge of electronic circuits and system interactions, as well as the ability to troubleshoot challenging failure modes and clearly document results.

Essential Duties:


60%Individual Contributor
  • Investigate field failures of returned products through system-level testing and circuit board debugging.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting through creation of custom test setups and use of various electrical, electronic, and mechanical measurement devices.
  • Compile and analyze data from field returns. Generate and present summary reports to members of engineering and management teams.
  • Generate clear test procedures and protocols.
  • Engage with outside suppliers and labs on 3rd party failure analysis.
  • Collaborate with engineering team on testing to recreate failures and validate product improvements.
40%Supervision
  • Manages projects and priorities of members of the failure analysis team.
  • Selects, coaches and develops staff. Sets clear expectations to inspire and motivate the team. Manages performance-- recognizing achievement, providing feedback and administering progressive discipline when necessary.
  • Tracks and creates reports on specific key performance indicators.
  • Coordinate organization and setup of physical lab space, along with maintenance and purchasing of test equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • 3 years of relevant experience
  • 1 year experience leading or mentoring a team of individuals or long-term projects

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience leading a team of engineers and/or engineering projects.
  • Ability to comfortably operate electrical and electronic test and measurement tools such as digital volt meters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, passive and electronic loads and logic analyzers.
  • Experience interpreting electronics circuits and debugging printed circuit board issues.
  • Understanding of system level interactions between residential electrical systems, solar photovoltaics, and power electronics to facilitate driving issues to full root cause.
  • Understanding of quality concepts, root cause analysis problem solving techniques, statistical methods, and preventative/corrective actions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, team environment.
  • Coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Communicate effectively though written, graphical, and oral means.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills, the ability to make independent decisions, and work with minimal supervision
  • Understand and apply electrical techniques and theories.

LEVEL OF INDEPENDENCE: This position acts under the direction of the Manager or Director Engineering


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. The employee frequently is required to use hands to manipulate objects, tools or controls; and talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to walk; stoop; crouch; bend and reach above shoulders. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted and up to 100 pounds with assistance, waist high, up to 10 feet away. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to differentiate colors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be working in the typical conditions of a laboratory environment including seasonal variation in temperatures and occasional exposure to fumes or by-products. The employee must comply with the assigned location PPE requirements including but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, appropriate gloves, clothing and shields for required tasks.
